A Cup That Connects the World

Across South America, Yerba Mate isn’t just a drink — it’s a ritual of connection. Shared among friends, passed around in a traditional gourd, or sipped from your favorite mug, it’s a moment to slow down, feel energized, and enjoy togetherness.

At The Spice Hut, we celebrate that same spirit through our small-batch, expertly crafted Yerba Mate teas. Whether you love something bold, sweet, minty, or spiced, our blends capture the joy and vitality that make Yerba Mate so beloved.

What Exactly Is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate (pronounced yer-bah mah-tay) comes from the Ilex paraguariensis plant, a species of holly native to the lush forests of South America. Its leaves are dried, aged, and brewed to create a smooth, energizing beverage loved for centuries in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil.

It’s naturally rich in caffeine, antioxidants, and vitamins — providing steady, focused energy without the crash of coffee. The taste? Earthy, green, and full-bodied — like a bridge between green tea and roasted coffee, but uniquely its own.

☕ The South American Ritual of Sharing

In traditional Mate culture, the drink is prepared in a gourd (mate) and sipped through a metal straw (bombilla). One person, called the cebador, refills the gourd with hot water and passes it around the circle — a gesture of hospitality and friendship.

It’s more than a drink — it’s a moment of mindfulness and connection. Even when enjoyed solo, Yerba Mate invites you to pause, savor, and breathe.

How to Brew Yerba Mate (The Easy Way)

Traditionally, Mate is brewed in a gourd with a bombilla, but it’s just as easy to enjoy at home with your favorite teapot or French press.

Hot Brew:

  1. Heat water to about 160–175°F (not boiling).

  2. Add 1–2 tsp of Yerba Mate per 8 oz cup.

  3. Steep for 3–5 minutes — adjust to taste.

  4. Re-steep the same leaves for a second cup (many Mate lovers do!).

Cold Brew:

  1. Add 2 tbsp of Yerba Mate to 16 oz cold water.

  2. Refrigerate overnight.

  3. Strain and enjoy over ice — perfect with lemon or mint.
